Life & Legacy

Yotam Gilboa, son of Lea and Yosef, and younger brother of Adam and Omri, was born on the 20th of Shevat, 5745 (February 11, 1985) in Afula and grew up in Kibbutz Maoz Haim in the Beit She’an Valley. Yotam was known for his curious, energetic, and determined nature. He was a smiling, talkative child who charmed everyone who knew him. At Dekalim Elementary School and later at Gaon HaYarden High School, Yotam stood out as an outstanding student with exceptional analytical abilities, particularly in mathematics. Beyond his academic achievements, he was a loyal friend who was always ready to lend a helping hand, known for his warm smile and generous heart. Yotam was actively involved in social and community life. He served as a youth instructor and was deeply engaged in the kibbutz community. Yotam had a lifelong love of hiking and nature. He possessed natural leadership abilities, integrity, and a strong commitment to helping others.

In 2004, Yotam enlisted in the IDF and completed the IDF Paramedic Course. Determined to fulfill his aspiration to serve as a combat soldier, he went on to serve as a combat paramedic in the IDF’s Maglan commando unit. There, he demonstrated courage, professionalism, and deep loyalty to his fellow soldiers.

On the 23rd of Tammuz, 5766 (July 19, 2006), during the Second Lebanon War, Yotam was killed in battle while attempting to rescue a fellow soldier under heavy fire, an act of extraordinary courage and comradeship. He was 21 years old.

Yotam was laid to rest at the cemetery at Kibbutz Maoz Haim. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 2017, he was awarded a military citation by his division commander in recognition of his bravery. Yotam’s legacy lives on through his family, friends, and fellow soldiers, who remember him for his friendship, leadership, and boundless generosity.
