Life & Legacy

Philip Moscu, the eldest son of Luba-Lea and Shlomo-Ze’ev (Vladimir), and brother of Katya, was born on the 16th of Kislev, 5745 (December 10, 1984) in Moscow, Russia, then part of the Soviet Union. He was raised with a strong connection to Judaism and Zionism, shaped by the stories of his grandfather, who served first in the Polish Army and later in the Red Army, survived the Holocaust, and lost his entire family. In memory of his family, Philip adopted his mother’s maiden name, Moscu.

In 1991, Philip immigrated to Israel with his family, and they settled in Jerusalem. He attended the Yigal Alon School and later Mamlachti-Dati Gimmel, a religious public school in the Ramot neighborhood. When the family later moved to Ma’ale Adumim, Philip was determined to return to his former school and made his way back on his own, without his parents’ knowledge, an early sign of his independence and determination. At Makor Haim Middle School, Philip continued to nurture his love of Torah while pursuing violin studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Music. He played the violin for nine years. As a child, he won first place in a team chess competition in Jerusalem. Philip was curious, had an exceptional memory, and was an avid reader. He was especially interested in military history and weapons systems and had an extraordinary knowledge of military equipment, down to the smallest details. At 14, Philip began reading medical books, and in 1999 he started volunteering with Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national emergency medical service. He completed courses in CPR, trauma, and intensive care, and spent countless days and nights volunteering on ambulances from the MDA station in Ma’ale Adumim and at the trauma unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. At the same time, he volunteered with Israel’s Civil Guard, where he was certified as a patrol driver.

On August 2, 2004, Philip enlisted and completed his training in the IDF Paramedic Course. He went on to serve as a paramedic with the 101st Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade in the Etzion region. His fellow soldiers remembered him as a deeply committed combat soldier with a generous heart, who treated the wounded with remarkable care and sensitivity.

When the Second Lebanon War began, Philip insisted on joining the combat forces. On the 14th of Av, 5766 (August 8, 2006), during his third entry into southern Lebanon, the Puma armored vehicle he was traveling in was struck by an anti-tank missile in the village of Dabel. Philip was killed in the attack. He was 21 years old.

Philip was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His family chose a verse from Psalms for his headstone: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” (Psalms 23:4)
